Guide To Buying
A Log Home

Full Or Split Log
Kiln Or Air Dried

Your new log home may be built from a full log or from split log.

What's the difference?

  • Handcrafted full log homes are constructed using very large logs (actual trees) that vary in size and taper. This type of home is pre-built at the log home company’s assembly site, disassembled and then reassembled at the jobsite. The disadvantage of this type of home is that because of their massive size, they require a stronger foundation, also the extra time and expense it takes to build them, places them in the price range of $200-$400 per square foot.
  • Milled full log homes are constructed using logs that are run through a huge planer which gives them a uniform size and shape. The advantage to using this type of log is the cost savings. Because of their uniform size, the builder uses less time and labor to build your home, with a price range of $110-$175 per square foot. There is a way to get a handcrafted look for a fraction of the cost. Golden Eagle Log Homes offers a milled log with your choice of smooth or hand peeled finish. A common misconception about full log homes is that they are not as energy efficient as conventionally built homes. While the "R Factor" may be lower, your heating bill will be the same. Full log homes offer thermal mass, which is a way of storing energy from your furnace or air conditioner. The log stores energy like a battery and releases it slowly so you use less energy to heat or cool your home.
  • Insulated split log homes are constructed using conventional 2x6 insulated walls and installing split logs on the exterior. By installing Golden Eagle’s "butt and pass" corners (which are cut from solid logs) you achieve the look of a full log home. The advantage of using split log is the variety of interior wall options to choose from such as drywall, tongue and groove, stone, or split log. Split log homes range in price between $110-$175 per square foot.
  • Kiln or air dried logs. You will hear a lot of conflicting information about kiln dried versus air dried logs based upon the log home company you talk to. Golden Eagle Log Homes uses both methods. The main thing you should be concerned about, whichever method of drying is used, is that your log home is built properly by a builder trained in log home construction.
